GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2015

“Words for a Journey – The Art of Being with Dementia” has received a Good Design Award 2015. Released: A Guide to a Dementia Friendly Community

The Global Communication Centre within the International University of Japan and the Dementia Friendly Japan Initiative have released  “A Guide to a Dementia Friendly Community – Ideas for cross-sector and cross-generation initiatives.” This Guide was the outcome of a project which was funded by a grant from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare during the fiscal year 2014. Words for a Journey – The Art of Being with Dementia

Words for a Journey – The Art of Being with Dementia collects practical knowledge on living with dementia. Though many hold negative impressions of the disease, there are still many who are living well with dementia. They have not given up everything in their life just because they have the disease. The book collects wisdom and stories from such people, and extracts its essence to be shared widely. More specifically, the information in the book is formatted into small pieces of hints. The Format of the Words for a Journey – Pattern Language

Pattern Language is an idea proposed by architect Christopher Alexander for scribing out people’s knowledge. Alexander found repeatedly seen relationships between objects in a beautiful towns and buildings, and decided to call them “patterns”. He suggested collecting these patterns into one collection so it would become a “language” to be shared among people, so that everyone can join in on the building process of houses and towns. Bridging Communities : Sharing Our Memories (Fujinomiya Project)

Through photos, efforts to create a place where trans-generational exchange, including senior citizens with dementia, can engage in exchanges. In the winter of 2014, high school students from Shizuoka prefectural Fugaku-kan, set up an interactive event involving local senior citizens, using old photos from Fujinomiya. This interactive event was held in the Fujinomiya Station Shopping Street.
